Ce n'est pas un poisson d'avril, jugez par vous même par ces quelques extraits.

1) So, my first question : where is the name « Calle Real” coming from ? Is it a hommage to a street in La Habana? A reference to King Karl XVI Gustaf ? Or your wish to get into the elite of the greatest Timba artists?
Well Laura, first of all I would like to say hello to you and all of your readers.

I am the bandleader of Calle Real from Sweden. A band playing Timba that manages to attract the curiosity of many including purists and Cubans. Actually the story of the name is not what matters. The fact that Calle Real stands today for a trademark of quality and good music is even harder to believe for the first timers. It is also a phenomenon given the circumstances in which Calle Real exists, that we have delivered an extraordinary album and are now preparing new material for the next to come. With circumstances I mean playing Timba music in Europe with no commercial backup from neither the mainstream audience nor music industry, where all musicians work with other projects (to pay the rent) but love to work with Calle Real (for nearly no money) and where we’re met with scepticism from people who claim to understand the music business........

2) When did the band got created ? By who ?
The embryo to the band that we see today was a trio playing classical Son, the traditional Cuban music and music of the elder people in Cuba. This music has a passionate essence that made our melancholic Swedish nature vibrate. Of course Buena Vista Social Club was on.....

3) At the very start, your sound was « son »-oriented. How did you fall in the dark side of timba?
Starting to play Son was the best thing we could have ever done as a band. It takes some years for a musician to fully understand the consequences of the clave on the harmonies and the rhythm and to grasp the style, especially if the person in question has not been brought up with this music. It was a good school to start with, not impossible to achieve and still very groovy. In the band people like me had to learn the basics of music with son. Others had to re-adapt their ears to this new music and learn the style. For all of us it was a time of settlement......

5) Your songs are played in all salsa parties in Paris, there is a real chemistry when you are on stage, no doubt about it!

Your concert in Paris was a success, the public knew all the songs, did you realise it?
Well to be honest it was a merely shock to look at those glad, happy and singing Parisian faces. Not only that but it seemed to us they knew the lyrics and breaks in the music as well........

10) So what can we expect from Calle Real in the future ? A new album ?
With a reggeaton touch ?
Calle Real is in the middle of the process of writing new songs for the next album. We have 6 songs ready to go and 5 new more in the pipe. Hopefully we’ll record before autum and with a little help from our guardian angel will might ship the next CD during late 2008......
